Good Mentors Make You Believe in Them, Great Mentors Believe in You: Leveling Up Your Rocking in the Age of Social Media

The newly published book „Don’t Stop the Rock!“ by El-Houari „Wary The Warrior“ Si Abdelkader, highlights that choosing a mentor or being chosen by one should not be taken lightly, as it is crucial for the emergence of new talent and the maintenance of a rich and expressive tradition. The value of a mentor lies in not only showing the movements but also telling the story behind them. Several interviewees in the book’s appendix also comment on the importance of mentors. It is not just about learning dance steps, but rather about passion on a living culture in which the philosophy of preservation and development is paramount. Mentoring plays a crucial role by creating a solid foundation, promoting originality, and enabling authentic experience.

The Title of this short post reflects that the best mentors not only pass on their knowledge but also recognize and nurture the potential of students, turn weakness into strength, give students the freedom to explore different styles but also give constructive criticism and honest feedback to improve.

That’s the way forward!

However, in 2025, students who wanna get deep into Rocking—the OG dance style—are facing some real challenges thanks to the digital world we are living in. Sure, the internet’s got its perks, like hooking you up with info and connecting you with rockers, crews worldwide. That’s great! But it’s also messing with the vibe, turning something raw and real into something watered-down and basic. I’m talking about „dilution“, „likes culture“, and „Instagram/Facebook/TikTok trends“ took over what used to be all about authenticity, individuality, and keeping it 100 with the roots. To me the impact is obvious, too much noise and not enough focus, faking it instead making it. Although i like YouTube ( Not Social Media ), no amount of YouTube videos and tutorials can replace learning from OG’s. You gotta be in the room, soaking up the ENERGY, picking up the little details, and learning the unknown rules. That’s how you really get it.

Rocking Culture != Social Media!

Get over it!

So what’s the move? For young Rockers, my recommendation is stay grounded! Learn the basics, don’t believe everything you see online, find a mentor who knows their stuff! Don’t forget finding a mentor means DISCOVERY! You have to start your research! There is no short cut! If you can mix both worlds (real/online), that’s great! Use the internet to connect and grow, but never lose sight of what makes Rocking real.
